In writing, they say to never open with a question. Of course, who am I to follow the one’s who make up the rules of writing? Do you know that feeling you get during the holidays? Giddiness, unrelenting joy, and maybe a bit of nausea. I have all of those. Football season is right around the corner and your Ottawa University Braves have opened Fall Football camp. With this edition of the Food, Family, and Football Podcast, I speak with Braves Head Football Coach Nick Davis about camp opening. What happens during the first few days of camp? There is a jaunty discussion on Football Media Day. We then turn to the upcoming scrimmage with Mid-America Nazarene and what happens after, and of course, this podcast will not be complete unless we discuss food. Coach Davis and I discuss pizza and our favorites when the Braves are on the road.
From recruiting, coaching changes, and tacos, we sit down with Ottawa University Braves Head Football Coach Nick Davis and discuss the offseason. An old face returns to the coaching staff. The coaching staff went on a tour of the United States to find the best and brightest student-athletes. The coach even shares essential advice on relationships and how to get tacos.
September 3rd is coming fast. Week zero games are being played and soon the official start to the 2022 Ottawa University. Braves Football season is coming. In the special edition of the Football, Family, and Food podcast we bring back Coordinator’s Corner. Its chance to speak with Head Coach Nick Davis, Offensive Coordinator Tyler Hennes, and Defensive Coordinator Dante Bartee. In our first official chance to speak with the Coordinators, we find out what made the Ottawa University Braves an attractive place to be? What has surprised them so far? Do either one challenge for the position of “Chief Energy Officer”? We talk with Coach Davis about the scrimmage with Mid American Nazarene and how things break down from here as we pick up speed to the start of the 2022 season. It wouldn’t be an episode “Triple F” if we didn’t discuss food. We find out the goto’s for both Coach Bartee and Coach Hennes since coming to Ottawa. Sit back, relax and check in on the status of the Ottawa University Braves Football program as we are now in the fast land to the start of the season.
What started out as a June podcast quickly turned into a July podcast as we finally drop the latest edition of the Football, Family, and Food Podcast. We are just over a month away from Fall Camp opening up and on this edition of the podcast, Coach Davis and I discuss the different camps that have taken place. Looking for possible “diamonds in the rough” to add to the Braves Football team. There is a new Defensive Coordinator for Ottawa University, but at the time of the podcast, the name was not released. We’ll cover the new D-coordinator on a future podcast. Plus, Coach Davis discusses his Top Five BBQ places that are not in Ottawa, KS.
Momma Mia! It’s time for the latest edition of the Nick Davis Podcast, sure we haven’t named it yet, but Coach has been working hard to perfect his special recipe to bring home another KCAC Conference Championship this fall. This edition of the podcast features a discussion on changes at Defensive Coordinator. What qualities are looked at to fill the void? Spring Ball has come to an end. Coach Davis discusses the practices, the early morning weight room trips, and the Spring Game. Then the podcast turns to the culinary arts as Coach Davis professes his love for cooking, the Food Network, his special recipe for pizza crust, and who is the true Iron Chef of Ottawa University. Was a name for the podcast found in this episode? We’ll see what mama Davis thinks. If you like the possible name, give us a shout on Twitter. Let Coach Davis know at @CoachNickDavis. You can always hit me up at @kneel_johnson. Sit back, listen, and enjoy a delicious episode of the Nick Davis Podcast.
If you’ve been holding your breath waiting for a new Coach Davis podcast, you can exhale. We’ve stacked the box, took it one play at a time, and other coaching cliches with this month’s edition of the “Podcast Supreme.” A day after the day of love, Coach Davis and I spit a few bars out about the coming and going of National Signing Day. We’ll find out if recruiting new players is like playing General Manager or a salesperson?
We then slide into a discussion about the idea of Ottawa University Football being like a family and why that is important? Is it a selling point to recruit and transfer students? Does the coaching staff lead by example, if so, how?
Coach Davis and I transition into how the Ottawa Braves Coaching Staff, just like my waistline, continues to grow. Coach and I hit the points about the Braves’ new Co-Offensive Coordinator/Quarterbacks Coach Tyler Hennes. How will the dynamic between Coach Mendez and Coach Hennes work? Coach Hennes has spent time in all levels of football. How has that has helped him and how that might help the Braves in the future.
Reminder. I’m not overly creative. So if you have a suggestion on a name for this podcast with Coach Davis, be sure to hit us up on Twitter at @kneel_johnson or @CoachNickDavis.
We start 2022 with an interview conducted during the dying embers of 2021. I had the opportunity to interview new Ottawa University Braves Head Football Coach Nick Davis. Coach Davis was named the new Head Coach in November of 2021 after former Coach Kent Kessinger retired after a fantastic career at Ottawa University. During my discussion with Coach Davis, we look at his first year at Ottawa University as Defensive Coordinator. What surprised him and what he wished he knew coming into the position. Plus, when the staff knew Coach Kessinger decided to retire. What did Coach Davis do after being named Head Coach? All that and more in the first edition of the unnamed football podcast.
For a not-so-awful day in August for football practice, Ottawa University was prepping hard for their season opener on August 28th. Pads were popping, coaches were yelling, and the team was trying to create beautiful music on the gridiron.
Defensively the Braves are showing promise. Making plays and disrupting the Braves Offensive was the norm during the practice on Saturday morning (August 21st). That side of the ball is looking forward to hitting someone other than the people they see every day. They get a chance this weekend when Ottawa takes the field at Oklahoma Panhandle State. Several key pieces from last year return including, Colby Johnson, Jacob Garcia, Jaylin King, and several others. With a change in scheme and Coordinators, it will be interesting to see how the defense performs this season.
I spoke with Head Coach Kent Kessinger after practice. Coach admitted the offense is a little behind where he wants them to be. In the audio below, Coach Kessinger gives his explanation. The run game for Ottawa University should be a strength. Derrick Curtis returns this season and looks to build upon the start he had during the 2020 campaign. The Braves also bring back James Reeder and Dalyn Johnson in the Running Back spot.
Dylan Foos and Jermaine Ziegler are back at Wide Receiver. Colton Davis spent time at Quarterback and Receiver returns for the Braves. The Braves will need those three plus a host of others at the Receive spot to step up.
In my opinion, the biggest question coming into this season will be the Quarterback spot. Who will step up to take that “brass ring”? Those questions and more will come into focus as the season gets underway on August 28th. Listen to the broadcast on 103.7 FM, 1220 AM KOFO, and KOFO.com. Pregame will start at one that afternoon. Kickoff follows at two.
